Toyota adds fresh face and mild-hybrid to HiLux range
Significant design and feature updates feature on the new look HiLux pickup, with the revised model arriving in local showrooms later this month. When it lands, some variants will be available with what it calls 48-Volt technology.
The upgraded HiLux features a refreshed front-end design, with a revised grille and front bumper, combined in an interlocking design, with the latter housing the fog lamps on the SR5.
On most WorkMate variants, a black honeycomb mesh grille is now applied for a tough and sporty look and paired with black lower and body-coloured side bumper finishes.
A tailgate damper has been added on pickup variants. The front bumper on WorkMate single-cab chassis and petrol double-cab variants has been changed from a dark grey finish to black.
SR grades add a silver coloured lower bumper finish, while the SR5 goes further with a black upper grille mould. It also scores a dark-tinted LED headlamp cluster, and gloss black fog lamp bezels.
That same colour scheme has been applied to the exterior mirrors and outside door handles. The 48-Volt tech (or mild hybrid as it’s better known) is standard on 4×4 Rogue and automatic SR5 double cabs.
It’s optional for 4×4 SR double cabs, and in all cases improves engine smoothness and fuel economy.
Compared to the current generation of the popular ute, that’s to the tune of between six and 10 per cent from the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine.
The 48-Volt system comprises a motor generator, battery and DC/DC converter, which enables a stop/start system as well as enhancing driveability and fuel efficiency, all while reducing noise and harshness.
Variants with this technology are also made more capable off-road with the standard fitment of Multi-Terrain Select, offering six drive modes that enhance performance in challenging conditions.
SR grades fitted with the optional 48-Volt technology gain dual-zone automatic climate control, smart entry and start, automatic up-down control for the power windows, and carpet floor mats.
Regardless of powertrain choice, all SR double-cab automatic pick-up grades now feature two front and four rear parking sensors to help make navigating tight spaces easier.
The SR5, Rogue and GR Sport grab a wireless charging pad as well. That’s in addition to two rear USB-C ports next to the air-conditioning vents for double-cab variants.
