SXSW Sydney hosts Zeekr X launch and 009 MPV preview

In what has to be one of the coolest launch events ever, EV brand Zeekr created a cityscape track on the event deck at the International Convention and Exhibition Centre (ICC), allowing people to drive its new X compact SUV and 009 MPV.

The Zeekr X is a luxurious compact SUV that features an intelligent electric drive system, offering 315kW of peak power and a 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.8 seconds. It’s powered by a 66kWh battery that provides up to 540km of range.

Fast charging should see it reach 80 per cent in just 30 minutes. Brimming with tech, the new model features a 23.4-inch augmented reality head-up display, 14.6-inch infotainment with Zeekr voice control, a full 360-degree camera, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

You’ll also find a 5.7-litre fridge hidden inside, that can go as low as -15-degrees Celsius. On the safety front, the Zeekr X comes with a 5-Star ANCAP rating and is built with 720-degree all-around safety armour (similar to that found in the Volvo EX30).

A patented 8-grid battery crash protection structure enhances side impact protection. The advanced driver assistance system includes autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and a host more.

Alongside the X model, the 009 made its first appearance down under. When it launches later this year, it will be available in both 7-seat (2+2+3) or exclusive 6-seat (2+2+2) configuration, with a 450kW dual motor AWD powertrain.

That’s paired with a 116kWh battery and dual chamber air suspension with electromagnetic continuously controlled damping. Its interior is adorned in Nappa leather, complemented by a 15.05-inch front display screen and a 17-inch rear entertainment screen.

The latter can be viewed from the second row individual 14-way Sofaro first-class aviation-type seats, including headrest speakers as part of the 3000W Yamaha surround sound system. As for the event itself, it all kicked off with food (as it should).

A DJ set the vibe for what was to be an electric atmosphere (pun intended). Live music added to the exciting experience. With the Zeekr X and 009 on hand, test drives around the track gave us a unique experience, showcasing the comfort and sleek design of the vehicles, complemented by their advanced technology.

The Chinese car maker, which is part of the Geely Group, plans to open several pop-up stores in major Australian cities during the fourth quarter of this year. These stores will serve as physical locations for customers to experience the Zeekr X.
