The i5 M60, an all-out high-performance electric super saloon, is a vehicle with plenty going for it. The exterior design is truly impressive. The sleek, aerodynamic lines give it a futuristic and modern look that is sure to turn heads wherever it goes.

From its unique body shape, which is both sporty and elegant, to its aggressive stance, it exudes power. There’s plenty of sophistication too, and the smooth grille not only adds to that, but also serves a functional purpose as it houses all the radar safety systems.

The lighting that glows around it is a standout feature, giving the i5 M60 a distinctive presence. BMW headlights are a classic touch, but from a distance they have a unique look that resembles fangs. Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice unique DRLs and a splash of blue that adds an elegant touch.

The side profile is accentuated by sharp lines and curves, giving it a dynamic and eye-catching appearance, while the 20-inch alloy wheels, M style door mirrors in carbon fibre, and flush door handles all add to the sporty aesthetic of the car. The absence of a fake exhaust is an appreciated detail.

As for the rear, the sporty diffuser and slim rear tail lights add to the overall sleekness. Step inside, and you’re immediately struck by the stunning surrounds, with a crystal-like effect similar to that found in the iX a standout.

This panel runs across the dashboard and into the doors, and when combined with ambient lighting, is an elegant and sophisticated. On the centre console, a similarly attired swivel wheel and volume knob give a luxurious appearance in a car that has exceptional build quality.

The design is a perfect blend of futuristic and contemporary styles, while the physical buttons on the steering wheel are a welcome feature, eliminating the need for less intuitive haptic feedback offerings. The integration of speakers behind perforated aluminium panels is a clever choice too.

The i5 M60 xDrive stands out in terms of technology thanks to with its impressively large screen area. Combining everything under a single panel, it features a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, with clear graphics.

Running the latest version of BMW OS, it has more available apps than a smartphone, compatibility with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a head-up display that would feel at home in a fighter jet, gesture controls, and voice commands.

One of the coolest features though is the ability to change the car’s personality by simply choosing a drive mode. Whether it’s Personal, Sport, Efficient, Expressive, Relax, or Digital Art, the ambient lighting, sound effects, and screen layout all adapt to fit.

The added touch of Hans Zimmer-created sounds adds to the immersive experience. On the downside, the controls on the interaction bar can be a bit difficult to press at times, and not everyone will love the ability to watch BMW-specific movies in the car.

The Bowers & Wilkins 18-speaker sound system must be one of the loudest on a production car today, and it delivers clear and crisp audio that only could be experienced in theatres. You also get two USB-C ports and a wireless phone charging station.

When it comes to comfort, the i5 M60 doesn’t disappoint. It’s visually appealing leather seats in a two-tone white and grey trim are not only stylish, but also incredibly comfortable. These seats are some of the most supportive you will find in any super saloon, especially during spirited driving.

Electronically adjustable, along with the steering wheel, the combination makes it easy to find the perfect driving position. In addition to the luxurious comfort of said seats, they also feature heating and ventilation, synced to the climate control system.

The only downside to that is the fact its controls are located on the screen, making it challenging to adjust settings while driving. Disappointingly, there is also no storage in the centre console. The presence of a central transmission tunnel also seems unnecessary on an EV.

That said, the car does redeem itself slightly with generously sized door bins that can accommodate larger items like water bottles or flasks. There’s also plenty of rear leg room and head room, thanks to clever cut outs in the front seats and roof.

The floor is a bit high as a result of the battery panels below it, which may affect under thigh support, but it’s minimal. The digital display for rear climate controls and heated seats, along with two USB-C ports, provide convenience for passengers.

Additionally, USB-C ports are located on the back of both the driver and front passenger’s seats, with an accessory attachment for an iPad holder or for storing items. In terms of boot capacity, you get a more than adequate 490-litres.

The 2024 BMW i5 M60 xDrive comes equipped with a range of safety features, including autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, front and rear cross traffic alert, and a Driving Assistant package with lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control.

The latter is an exceptional semi-autonomous setup that is downright dreamy in terms of capability. The car also features a similar parking assist platform and reversing assistant, as well as front and rear sensors and surround-view cameras with a 3D view.

All-in-all, it’s an impressive electric super saloon, boasting 442kW of power and 820Nm of torque from its dual motors, allowing it to sprint from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.8 seconds. Priced at $215,900 plus on-roads, it comes equipped with an 84kWh battery.

Range is a claimed 516km, although we were about 100km down on that in real world testing. Despite the shortfall, the i5 M60 makes up for it with its fast-charging capabilities (10-80 per cent in just 30 minutes on a DC fast charger).

You’ll receive a free 5-year Chargefox subscription as part of your purchase, for a vehicle that took this writer by surprise. It’s a thrilling electric alternative to the standard 5 Series, and when pushed to its limits, gives a proper jolt of excitement.

The boost mode paddle behind the steering wheel delivers a quick burst of power. Adding to the drama is the launch control feature, which makes the car vibrate and the seat belt tighten before takeoff, giving a sensation of entering warp speed.

With the M Adaptive Suspension Pro included as standard, the ride height is lowered for a more stable and sportier feel when tackling corners, while still maintaining comfort. The car’s body control is exceptional, thanks to an active 48-volt anti-roll stabilisation system.

The entire package keeps it flat and steady through bends despite its weight exceeding 2300kg. Rear wheel steer and all-wheel drive traction further enhance the dynamic driving experience. It still feels quintessentially BMW, and is a true driver’s car.

With superior performance, comfort, luxury, build quality, and sporting heritage from its M lineage, this model shines as a beacon for electric sedans. You can find out more on the BMW Australia website, or by talking to your local dealership.
