Review: 2024 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Now with improved tech, and more power, better looks and a revised front end design, the 2024 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor could well be one of the best EVs available today. Tested here with the optional performance upgrade, it also sports the Pilot and Plus packs.

In a nutshell, that adds everything from radar cruise control to a 13-speaker surround sound Harman Kardon audio system, a panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate, and heated and ventilated electric front seats. The latter are super comfortable, and also feature powered lumbar support.

It’s a cosy cabin though, with the distance between the outer doors and the centre console quite cramped. The rear seats provide the same level of luxury, and are also heated. There’s plenty of legroom, but the tapered roofline is beyond close to the top of your melon if you’re anything over 180cm tall.

Rear visibility through the angled rear glass is minimal but the side mirrors more than make up for it. Not only do they offer a nice wide-angle view, but they’re smart enough to heat up, auto dim, and even tilt when reversing.

Interior trims are offered in three different upholsteries, including Nappa leather in Zinc and Light Ash, which is exclusive to the Plus Pack. The brand stands by its eco-credentials, and pretty much everything you can think of has either been ethically sourced, is made of vegan leather, or incorporates recycled materials.

Technology comes in the form of an 11.2-inch infotainment system and 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, both of which are sharp, fast and high quality. Literally everything is controlled through the screens, and a result, it takes some getting used to.

A head-up display ensures you don’t have to take your eyes off the road, but is connected to the car’s inbuilt Google operating system. The downside of that is it won’t display maps from your Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connected smartphone.

Both smartphone integrations require a cord, but there is wireless charging. The Polestar 2’s operating system also means you can connect directly to Spotify, and even access YouTube if you’re parked (handy for when you’re waiting for it to charge).

Storage is available in both the front trunk (41-litres), and rear boot, which providees 407-litres with the seats up, or 1097-litres with them folded. The Plus Pack also adds a fold-up floor panel to hold your groceries in place, which is a genuinely nifty feature.

On the road, the long range dual motor performance variant is good for 350kW of power and 740Nm of torque, which translates to a sprint to 100km/h in 4.2 seconds. Riding on 20-inch polished forged alloys, it features gold Brembo brake callipers.

There are also gold seatbelts and tyre pressure valve caps, as well as Ohlins shock absorbers to add to the unique look this particular offering provides. It also sits a little lower than its siblings, with 146mm of clearance at the front and 161mm at the rear.

Under the hood is an 82kWh 400V lithium-ion battery, which is good for a claimed 568km. In real world testing, we were able to manage an even 500km, while using its performance capabilities plunged it to less than 450km.

To be fair, if you’ve chosen this spec, you’re unlikely to be too concerned about range, and instead will be grinning from ear-to-ear as you unleash the instant torque the Polestar 2 delivers in spades. The battery itself is capable of handling up to 205kW DC fast charging.

That should mean it reaches 80 per cent in around 28 minutes. You’re looking at eight hours if you have 11kW AC charging at home. The Polestar 2 is available in six colours, including the as-tested Space (black), Midnight (blue) and Thunder (gun metal grey).

It’s a good looking vehicle that with all the boxes ticked and every option fitted will set you back around $100,000. You can get into this variant from as little as $82,000, and the standard range single motor variant kicks off at $68,000 - all drive away.
